CedarCreek Estate Winery in Kelowna, along with its vineyards in Kelowna and Osoyoos, has been sold to VMF Estates, owner of West Kelowna's Mission Hill Family Estate winery.
But that didn't stop Anthony von Mandl, the owner of West Kelowna's Mission Hill Family Estate winery, from making an offer the CedarCreek owners couldn't refuse.
The purchase price wasn't revealed when the deal was announced Friday.
However, it's likely a bundle.
CedarCreek is an incredible asset as one of the Okanagan's original eight wineries, two-time Canadian Winery of the Year and respected maker of quality vintages.
It has a spectacular winery and vineyards on Lakeshore Road in Kelowna and extensive vineyards in the Osoyoos area.
CedarCreek also has ownership pedigree with former Liberal senator Ross Fitzpatrick and his wife, Linda, as proprietors and son Gordon as president.
Von Mandl isn't short of cash when it comes to business either.
Besides owning Mission Hill, which has its own breathtaking winery atop a mountain, award-winning wines and vineyards throughout the Okanagan, he owns the Mark Anthony Group. The group is a massive importer of wines and beers from all over the world for sale in Canada, and it also has beverage brands such as California Cooler, Mike's Hard Lemonade, Palm Bay, Rockstar and Okanagan Premium Cider.
"Our family has long admired the pioneering achievements of Ross, Linda and Gordon Fitzpatrick," said von Mandl. "The Fitzpatrick family has consistently produced some of the top wines in the Okanagan Valley."
Paying tribute to CedarCreek founder Ross Fitzpatrick, von Mandl said his vision "has not only built one of the most respected estate wineries in British Columbia, but has been instrumental in making the Okanagan wine industry what it is today."
Ross Fitzpatrick was equally complimentary about von Mandl.
"I cannot imagine a better place for CedarCreek given Anthony's commitment to the Valley and his goal to place the Okanagan on the international wine map," he said.
"We have placed CedarCreek in good hands."
CedarCreek will maintain its name and winery on Lakeshore Road, and will remain independent with separate operations, winemaker, staff, management and its own wines.
"We are confident CedarCreek will continue to over-deliver under the ownership of the van Mandl family and the winemaking guidance of Darryl Brooker," said Gordon Fitzpatrick.
The purchase is expected to be completed in February.
The Fitzpatricks did not sell their Greata Ranch Estate Winery and its vineyard in Peachland.
