Another avalanche Thursday again closed the Coquihalla highway between Hope and Merritt.
After being closed for more than 24 hours after an avalanche on Tuesday, the highway was reopened to traffic on Wednesday night. But another avalanche Thursday at 11 a.m. 33 kilometres north of Hope forced the second closure.
No vehicles were trapped and no one was hurt in the Class 4 avalanche that was 100 metres wide and three metres deep. The worst classification for an avalanche is Class 5.
Chilliwack Search and Rescue escorted vehicles stopped by the wall of snow back to Hope.
The Ministry of Highways' DriveBC.ca website indicates the highway will be closed in both directions until at least this morning. That's when officials will first be able to get to the site for clearing and assessment.
It was too windy on Thursday for helicopters to be used for avalanche control.
Motorists wanting to reach the coast are advised to detour via Highway 1 at Kamloops and Hope or via Highway 8 at Merritt, and to check DriveBC.ca for updates on the Coquihalla.
Snowfall continues in the area, with avalanche conditions that are said to be the worst during the 27 years the highway has been open.
