Anyone who expects to see red-hot firefighters in skimpy skivvies might be disappointed when they get their hands on a new calendar being released tomorrow.
No rippling forearms. No chiselled abs. Just 12 shots of dedicated professionals doing their jobs.
"It's not a meathead-type calendar, pictures of our guys with their shirts off," West Kelowna firefighter Dennis Hall said Tuesday.
"We wanted to make it a calendar suitable for families to put up in their homes," Hall said, adding with a laugh: "We didn't have enough guys who were willing to show their flesh anyway."
Three thousand copies of the calendar have been produced, with each selling for $10. Proceeds will go toward the B.C. Professional Firefighters Burn Fund. The fund is helping to pay for a new building specifically to treat people who've suffered serious burns.
In recent years, it has become common for calendars to feature racy pictures in support of good causes. Senior citizens at a Kelowna retirement home, for example, produced a calendar in which they appeared to be topless.
But given the proliferation of such calendars, Hall said it's almost "out-of-the-box" thinking now to produce one with more traditional images. The calendar has been available for two weeks at West Kelowna firehalls and some local businesses, but it will get its official launch during Ladies Night at Two Eagles Golf Course.
Some women, Hall admits, have been disappointed to find less-than-
titillating images. "I've heard a few comments like, 'Hey, what are you guys doing with your clothes on?'
"But then we explain our thinking and stress that the money's all going for a good cause, and they're like, 'Ah, I guess that's OK, then.'"
