A small fire forced staff and customers to evacuate the Westbank Walmart store Saturday night.
Paper stored under a magnetic machine used to authorize payments ignited in the store's jewelry department about 9:30 p.m. Staff used a dry-chemical extinguisher to smother the flames before firefighters arrived.
"They went over the P.A. system and evacuated the staff and maybe half a dozen customers in there," said West Kelowna Fire Rescue assistant Chief Kerry Klonteig.
"It caused a mess with the extinguisher and residual smoke."
Fire officials suggested managers send staff home before the store's regular 11 p.m. closing so they could call their insurance company and assess the cleanup. The Louie Drive store reopened as usual on Sunday.
