Kelowna firefighters responded to a blaze at Burtch Plaza about 1 a.m. that destroyed several businesses.

Crews battled heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof of the strip mall. They were forced to a defensive exterior fire attack when the ceiling of the units collapsed. The fire eventually destroyed units four through seven.

Police evacuated one employee from Cora’s Restaurant before firefighters arrived. As well, residents from the nearby apartments were evacuated from their suites and sheltered in the lobbies during the aggressive fire. They were allowed back in without incident when the fire was extinguished. There were no injuries.

The cause of the blaze is listed as undetermined, and investigators are on scene to investigating.
