Vernon RCMP are trying to determine whether a man found dead next to a popular trail Thursday morning was killed.
A person going for a walk in the trails above Clarence Fulton Secondary School discovered the body about 9:30 a.m.
It was lying a short distance from the main trail above Okanagan Landing Road near South Vernon Drive, RCMP said.
The area is fairly open with scrub brush and two-foot sage. Considering how well-travelled the trail is, police believe the 36-year-old man died the night before.
"Where he was found, it would be only be a matter of time before someone found him. It's a busy walking system. People would have noticed immediately," said spokesman Gord Molendyk.
Police have identified the man and are trying to notify his family. Molendyk believes he has relatives in the North Okanagan.
There's no outward sign of trauma.
Police don't believe he was homeless. An autopsy will determine the cause of death.
A coroner has visited the scene, but it wasn't clear when the autopsy will happen.
