The Okanagan's first baby of the year was born in Penticton.
Gursimart Chahal delivered a girl weighing seven pounds, one ounce at 2:57 p.m. Tuesday. She and her husband Baljinder Chahal weren't expected to name their daughter right away.
Mother and child were doing well, said delivery nurse Heidi McKelvey at Penticton Regional Hospital.
"They're both healthy and happy."
Staff gave the Penticton family hand-knitted blankets as a memento. The baby has a brother, five-year-old Arshdeep.
Maternity staff at Kelowna General Hospital were still waiting for their first delivery late Tuesday afternoon. A mother gave birth at Vernon Jubilee Hospital after the Penticton baby, but details were withheld until today.
