On Nov. 30, the Kelowna-Lake Country Conservative Party hosted its annual general meeting and Christmas party at the Ramada Hotel. The event was open to the public and was well attended.
Among those in attendance were MP Ron Cannan, Mayor Walter Gray and his wife Doreen, and B.C. Minister of Agriculture Norm Letnick.
The point was made that some of us may think the MP is an extraordinary celebrity-like figure, requiring special salutation and acknowledgment. However, when meeting an MP, no bow or courtsey is required, just an ordinary handshake will do.
You may be surprised to find out how knowledgeable, helpful, and easy our MPs are to talk to.
The MP is your voice in Ottawa. He or she represents the constituents of the riding on matters relating to the federal government, its departments and agencies such as Passport Canada, Citizenship and Immigration, Employment Insurance, Canada Revenue Agency, CPP, OAP and Veteran's Affairs. An MP plays many roles, including legislator, negotiator, ombudsman, policy analyst, public speaker and diplomat. Your MP can ensure fair and timely access to federal government programs and services and deal with any arising issues.
We are fortunate to have Cannan representing the Kelowna-Lake Country riding. Since 2006, he has diligently worked in co-operation with all levels of government, resulting in significant infrastructure improvements, such as upgrades to Highway 97, the expansion of Kelowna International Airport, obtaining a full-service passport office for Kelowna and addressing various critical economic issues.
He also meets with the local chamber of commerce and arranges annual meetings with cabinet ministers to improve local issues, including labour shortages.
Further, he is active in many community initiatives, including homelessness, women's resources, and arts and culture. For those who have had the opportunity to meet him, you know how resourceful, open, and helpful he is.
I am grateful for the many years Cannan has assiduously served and represented our community.
