Is it any wonder more and more Canadians are losing faith in the RCMP and the so-called independent justice system.
We have a senior RCMP officer in Merritt who pled guilty to breach of trust in the alleged theft of cocaine from the RCMP lockup.
The theft charge was dropped, and there was never any mention of possession of a controlled substance or possession for the purposes of trafficking. We will never know the whole story. I believe he got the lightest charge possible, and the sentencing will likely reflect that.
In another recent case, another senior officer reportedly punched another officer at a hockey tournament. All details are kept secret. Would that be the case if it were any of us ordinary citizens?
The worst yet is allegations now that Mounties in the North have been routinely assaulting, both physically and sexually, aboriginal women in their home communities and keeping them silent with threats of more violence.
The good guys in the force far outnumber the bad, so its time for them to step up and stop the abuses we keep seeing. And the judiciary needs to reflect the disgust of our citizens.
