As a non-native living on Westbank First Nation lands, I am aware that we are not recipients of the $200 rebate on carbon taxes.
We did not receive the rebate in 2011 or 2012 and, unless the government changes its policy, we will not receive it this year.
The advisory council that represent residents with the chief, band council and provincial government, has sent numerous letters to the premier, minister of finance and our MLA, Ben Stewart. The chief and council have also sent letters to the same elected officials.
Do these politicians not realize that we purchase fuel for our homes and cars? Where is the equality when our neighbours across the street receive the rebate while we sit empty handed?
Perhaps, as non-natives, we should join the Idle No More movement. Would it help cease this blatant discriminatory decision on the part of our government?
I wonder if Stewart received his rebate? Has he actively persued the unfairness of this carbon tax rebate problem?
D. Murray,
Westbank
