Dr. Sally Otto, who is doing research at UBC Okanagan, recently won $100,000 for five years.
She has donated the first $100,000 to The Nature Trust and the Nature Conservancy in the South Okanagan. These organizations buy up land to conserve it in its natural state and prevent developers from destroying natural wildlife habitat and important grasslands.
Congratulations, Dr. Otto.
Wouldn't it be fantastic if some of these overpaid hockey players in our community would start thinking long term and dish over some money for a good cause instead of building obscene 4,000-square-foot homes and driving big SUVs which consume so much of our natural resources?
These homes have four or five bathrooms and huge, landscaped lawns, consuming large amounts of water.
What do you do with all that space? Who needs it?
E. Bunge,
Kelowna
