Bishop-elect Bart van Roijen

A Kelowna priest has been named bishop of the Diocese of Corner Brook and Labrador.

Father Bart van Roijen will be ordained to the episcopate on Dec. 12.

“I am honoured and a bit surprised by the confidence Pope Francis has placed in me,” van Roijen said in a news release.

Bishop-elect van Roijen, 54, is the first priest from the Diocese of Nelson to be called to the episcopate.

“His great love for the church and her people will be a real blessing to the Diocese of Corner Brook and Labrador, as well as his many gifts, especially his humility, wisdom and humour,” said Bishop Gregory Bittman, bishop of the Diocese of Nelson.

Currently, van Roijen is pastor at St. Charles Garnier Parish at 3645 Benvoulin Rd. in Kelowna.
