It’s official. There are less than two weeks until Christmas — 12 days in fact. And most of you are no doubt in a harried state juggling working, shopping, decorating, meal planning, guest hosting and obligatory holiday partying.

No wonder everyone truly needs a respite after the holidays.

So I thought I’d try to make one small component of your life a little easier by suggesting wines suitable for each of your remaining 12 days of Christmas. Even if you don’t require that many yourself, you’ll have plenty of options for sharing and the one or two (or three) to help see you through the grind.

First Day of Christmas

Nk’Mip 2013 Pinot Blanc

Granny Smith apple, pear, honeysuckle and a hint of herbs — bright and fresh with a slightly pleasant waxy texture — really good value.

Bartier Bros. 2012 Illegal Curve

Easy drinking red featuring bright cherry, strawberry, mocha, pepper aromas. The palate is full of soft red fruits and smooth tannins, with just a hint of black pepper and cocoa. 54 per cent Cabernet Franc, 39 percent Syrah, seven per cent Merlot

Inniskillin 2011 Merlot

Chocolate covered cherries, blackberry jam, pie crust, toasty and pepper notes. Blackberry, cherry and plum flavours with some pepper and toasty oak flavours. Easy quaffable wine at an affordable price.

Gehringer Brothers 2013 Dry Riesling

Green apple, apricot, lime and herbal notes. Fresh palate with mouthwatering acidity, succulent tree fruit, mineral and citrusy flavours.

Eau Vivre 2013 Cinq Blanc

Light and bright with aromas of peach, pineapple,, apple, floral and some sweet spice — lots of tree fruit flavour on the palate with hint of honey finishing with some lemon zest. Blend of Viognier, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Muscat, Sauvignon Blanc

D’Angelo 2010 Setta Coppa

Deep magenta colour with aromas and flavours of black currants, coffee, toast, vanilla bean, dark chocolate, and savoury spice. Luscious and velvety and good value. 40 per cent Merlot, 20 per cent Cab Franc, 18 per cent Malbec, 12 per cent Cab Sauvignon, 10 per cent Petit Verdot.

Dirty Laundry 2013 Pinot Gris

Apricot, honeysuckle, vanilla, tropical fruit and orange zest and cream — entry is sweet peaches and cream, canned fruit salad and pineapple — some good acidity but better suited to the off-dry wine enthusiast.

Ancient Hills 2011 Baco Noir

Inky black hue is the signature of this variety which serves up spicy black cherry, plum, mocha, soy sauce, menthol and anise aromas. The palate features rich black fruit, menthol, licorice and pepper flavours. A cult favourite.

Saxon 2013 Pinot Noir Rose

Deep salmon colour. Features wild strawberry, cranberry, rose petals, honeysuckle and orange aromas and flavours. Bright and fresh.

C.C. Jentsch 2013 The Chase

Blueberry, cassis, pepper, cocoa, savoury spice and cocoa in the bouquet. There's plenty of ripe dark fruits, baking spice, chocolate and soft tannins on the palate. Rich and warm for a cold winter night. Cabernet Sauvignon 32.5 per cent, Cabernet Franc 32.5 per cent, Merlot 30 per cent, Petit Verdot three per cent, Malbec two per cent

Twelfth Day of Christmas

Kraze Legz 2013 Skaha Vineyard Pinot Blanc

This blanc variety really delivers with notes of crisp pear, apple sauce, lemon oil, nutmeg and mineral. On the palate, there is ripe golden fruit, baking spice balanced by fresh citrus and mineral . Elegant yummy effort.
