Kelowna is more romantic than Victoria, Calgary, Edmonton and Prince George, but less romantic than Toronto, Ottawa and Fort McMurray.
Really, Kelowna is less romantic than Fort McMurray?
The northern Alberta oilsands hub is better known for cold weather and pickup trucks than candlelight and wine.
However, this year’s list of Canada’s 20 most romantic cities compiled by gargantuan e-commerce site Amazon.ca puts Fort McMurray firmly in the No. 1 position.
Kelowna was ranked No. 9, down from No. 7 from last year.
Last year, Fort McMurray was No. 3 and Victoria was tops.
Victoria was lucky to stay in the top 10 this year.
Amazon released the list prior to Valentine’s Day, likely to spark debate about what makes a city sexy and generate sales in its romance categories.
Rankings are based on per capita sales in 2019 of romance novels, romantic comedy movies, relationship books, jewelry and sexual wellness products.
In case you’re wondering what sexual wellness products are, they are an Amazon section of goodies that include vibrators, personal lubricants, condoms and libido-boosting supplements.
Some of the best-selling romantic comedies are classics such as I Love Lucy, Pretty Woman, Sleepless in Seattle, Love Actually and Titanic.
Really, Titanic is considered a romcom. Well, maybe until the boat sinks and 1,500 people perish.
Some of the hottest relationship books are The 5 Love Languages and Hold Me Tight: Seven Conversations for a Lifetime of Love.
Amazon’s news release did not specify which sexual wellness products were bestsellers. But a quick internet search reveals Trojan ultra-thin, lubricated condoms (36-pack), Shibari Premium personal water-based lubricant (eight ounce bottle) and a G Spot vibrator came in No. 1, 2 and 3.
