Community business partners, band members and former NHL players Jordin Tootoo and Byron Dafoe were among the players in Friday’s eighth annual Westbank First Nation Charity Golf Tournament.
The event has been sold out since its inception, and funds raised go toward youth programs.
“I’m excited about coming out and supporting the youth and the programs that benefit them,” said Westbank First Nation Chief Roxanne Lindley. “These programs help youth learn that they belong on the land.”
Programs include lessons in traditional drum-making and trapping as well as a trip to Ottawa for an Indigenous arts festival.
“This is so important. These kids are the future generation of leaders,” said band Coun. Chris Derickson. “In fact, I’d say they’re our current leaders as well.”
