In this photo taken from Sunday night's episode of MasterChef Canada on CTV, West Kelowna's Kaila Klassen looks at the ingredients from the mystery box.
Klassen breezed through the first two weeks of the reality TV cooking show, but this week found herself in the bottom four and facing elimination.
In the end, stand up comedian and radio host Ben Miner from Ottawa and St. Catharines, Ont., stay-at-home mom Meghan Toth were sent home in a surprise double elimination.
Klassen lives to compete and cook for at least another week.
The challenges on the show were difficult.
The first task was to create something sweet with the ingredients from a mystery box, including jars of peanut butter from sponsor Kraft.
"I did a really nice peanut butter and dark chocolate creme brulee," said Klassen when contacted by The Daily Courier on Monday.
"I'm surprised I didn't win that round."
The peanut butter winner - Miranda Mohammed, a Toronto stay-at-home mom - also won the right to name the key ingredient for the savory competition.
She chose smelts - those tiny little fish that look like sardines.
"Smelts aren't may favourite. I don't think they are anyone's favourite fish," said Klassen.
"But I did my best with them and created a red Thai curry with jasmine rice and deep fried smelt on the top. My curry was too hot. I have to remember to dial down the spice because the judges tend to like the dishes a little milder."
The eliminated cooks impressed the judges even less. Miner missed the mark with his smelt croquets and Toth failed with smelt quiche.
Klassen, a realtor with Re/Max, continues
on with the top 14 home cooks vying for the title of MasterChef Canada and the $100,000 prize money.
On the next show, next Monday at 8 p.m. on CTV, the cooks will again have two challenges and the bottom chef will be eliminated.
The 14 contenders will be split into two teams to prepare lunch for past and present Toronto Maple Leafs hockey players, including James Van Riemsdyk, Wendel Clark and Darryl Sittler.
And then they will have to make a complicated stuffed pasta.
