Twenty years of service to Vernon was recognized at a Vernon Winter Carnival event on Tuesday afternoon when Lyle Duffield was named the RCMP Volunteer of the Year.
Insp. Jim McNamara noted Duffield's service for the past 20 years with the Citizens on Patrol and his time as president on the board of Crime Stoppers, where he was a member for 15 years.
"He was in the first training class of Citizens Patrol volunteers back in 1997," said McNamara.
Duffield then used his experience and training to become the first captain of the Vernon Citizens Patrol in 2011.
"Lyle constantly goes above and beyond in the dedication to his community," said McNamara.
Duffield has been a businessman in Vernon for over 40 years and recently retired from the Hi-Fi Attic.
"I volunteer because I want Vernon to be a great place for my family and friends and other businesses. I want my grandchild to grow up to be safe. I want to be able, when I'm 80 years old, to walk downtown to a park without being mugged," Duffield said.
The award included a cheque for $500 from the Silver Star Rotary Club. Duffield immediately turned around and presented it to Margaret Clark of the North Okanagan Branch of the Restorative Justice Society.
