Hot-air balloon pilots try to find the winds that will carry them across Swan Lake, north of Vernon, to a target on the ice in a competition that's part of the Vernon Winter Carnival. Pilots toss bean bags from their balloons, aiming to come closest to the target. The carnival opened Friday and continues through Feb. 12.
