The Penticton Vees set a new BCHL record for consecutive wins on Tuesday, and they did so with style points.
Mario Lucia scored twice and added an assist, and Michael Garteig posted a shutout, as the Vees beat the Chilliwack Chiefs 7-0 for their 30th straight victory in front of 1,937 fans at Prospera Place in Chilliwack.
Joey Benik scored once and added two assists, as the Vees eclipsed the mark of 29 straight victories set in 1989-90 by the New Westminster Royals.
"I'm so excited . . . it's unbelievable to do what no other team in this league has done," said Vees forward Connor Reilly. "On Friday, when we tied the record, we played a good solid game, and I think we were able to carry that energy into (Tuesday's) game. Thirty wins . . . it's surreal - that's almost half a season right there."
Wade Murphy, Travis St. Denis, Grant Nicholson and Bryce Gervais also scored, as the Vees (42-3-0-2) won their 17th straight road game, also a league record.
Mike Reilly and Ryan Reilly each had two assists for the Vees, who totally dominated the game and outshot the home team 43-20. The Vees, who have four shutouts during the 30-game streak, led 2-0 and 4-0 at the period breaks.
Garteig said he enjoyed the view from the crease as the Vees rolled to the win.
"I'm pretty happy right now. This team is pretty special," he said. "The end goal is to win the championship, but 30 wins is pretty cool. A shutout always feels good, but the end result was to win.
"We didn't really think much about the streak until we got to about 25 wins, and then we thought we were pretty close and could set the record. The last five or six games were against pretty tough teams."
The Chiefs (24-20-1-2) lost their third straight game and dropped into a tie with Vernon for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Interior Conference. Vernon beat Trail 3-1 on Tuesday.
Having already clinched the Interior Conference pennant, Penticton needs just two more wins to wrap up the BCHL regular season title. Penticton faces Salmon Arm on Friday at 7 p.m., then host Westside on Saturday at 5 p.m.
