Shane McColgan had a three-point night for Kelowna, with a goal and two assists, and the Rockets brought out the brooms in a 4-1 road win over the host Prince George Cougars on Saturday night.
Just 24 hours earlier, the Rockets scraped by their roster-struggling hosts with a lacklustre 2-1 win that their coach didn't like.
On Saturday, Ryan Huska was praising his team's efforts after the Rockets outshot the Cougars 49-15, including 17-2 in the final period.
"We had to challenge some of our 17-year-olds and 18-year-olds to be better, and I thought they were," said Huska. "We played the right way; we were hungrier on pucks, we weren't sitting back as much and we played to win, which is something we're pretty proud of."
Tyrell Goulbourne, with his sixth goal of the season at 10:19 of the second period, Myles Bell, at 10:54, and, lastly, Carter Rigby, at 17:04 on the power play, also scored for Kelowna (24-23-2-4).
Daulton Siwak, with his 10th of the season at 7:36 of the second, scored for Prince George (16-34-0-2), which lost its third game in a row.
McColgan opened the scoring at 16:52 of the first with a power-play marker. The goal was his 15th of the season in Kelowna's 53rd game of the 2011-12 campaign.
Adam Brown stopped 14 shots for his second win in as many nights. Devon Fordyce stopped 45 shots for the Cougars, who are 1-6 against the Rockets this season.
The victory moved Kelowna over the .500 mark in points (54 points out of 106), but not record-wise, as the Rockets still have more combined losses than wins (24-23-6).
In the bad-news department, the Rockets lost tough defenceman Mitchell Chapman to injury early in the game, and his status won't be determined until later on.
"On the second shift," Huska said of losing Chapman to injury. "So we had a shortened lineup, but I thought our young guys really played well tonight. That was something that we challenged them in the morning and they responded very well."
ICE CHIPS: Kelowna's scratches were LW Brett Bulmer (flu), C Spencer Main (concussion), RW Jessey Astles (upper-body injury), RW Filip Vasko (knee) and LW Brett Lyon (to-be-determined suspension for a blindside hit in Friday's game). . . . The three stars were McColgan, Bell and Kelowna's Jesse Lees.
