Top cop

Vernon RCMP Supt. Shawna Baher was on foot patrol when she arrested a thief who'd earlier mugged an 84-year-old man.

A thug who mugged an 84-year-old Vernon man was arrested by the city’s top cop.

Vernon RCMP Supt. Shawna Baher was on a foot patrol when police got word of a man breaking into a truck in the 2800 block of 31st Street.

Baher quickly arrested the man, who turned out to be the suspect in the beating and robbery of an elderly man two days earlier.

Police say the senior was walking in an alley behind 35th Street when he was confronted.

“During the interaction, the victim was punched in the face, knocking him to the ground, and an item was stolen,” RCMP Cpl. Tania Finn said in a news release.

The suspect evaded the subsequent police search, but police had a good description of him from witnesses, which led to him being identified as the same man Baher arrested later.

A 20-year-old Vernon man is in custody and faces numerous charges, including robbery, assault causing bodily harm and theft under $5,000.
