Rain arrived just in time to make the second annual Dirty Mutter fundraiser even muddier than it would otherwise have been.

An obstacle course set up for dogs, and their human best friends, in Black Mountain was delightfully mucky on Sunday, both because of on-site irrigation and a good dousing from higher above.

"This year, we doubled the length of the course and added dozens of new obstacles," said Rhonda Laturnus of Results 4 Life Fitness, the event host.

"Most participants were covered from head to toe in mud while a few diva dogs managed to stay fairly clean, all things considered," Laturnus said.

Last year, the event raised more than $12,000 for Paws it Forward Dog Rescue. The goal on Sunday was $20,000. "Next year, we will have even more mud and more fun," Laturnus said.

More than 100 people took part in the event on Sunday, with about 70 dogs running the obstacle course.
