More free parking will be available in downtown Kelowna parkades as new parking rules go into effect today.

“Parkades are typically underutilized during evenings and weekends,” explains a city news release. “Offering more no-charge parking hours at parkades will help shift longer-term parkers away from on-street stalls.”

To entice drivers to use the Chapman, Library and Memorial parkades more, security will be beefed up with improved lighting and cameras being monitored around the clock.

New seasonal rates will be implemented and pay parking hours extended to 9 p.m. starting today at on-street stalls closest to the waterfront. People will now be allowed to park for three hours, up from two.
