The RCMP Marine Unit will continue voluntary vessel checks at the Paddlewheel Park boat launch in Vernon this summer.

RCMP volunteers assist in making sure that boaters meet all of the requirements of the Canada Shipping Act as well as RCMP regulations.

The Canada Shipping Act includes substantial fines for operating a pleasure craft without a licence or lack of safety equipment, such as life-jackets.

Following the pre-check, vessel operators will receive a document that can be produced if they are stopped by the RCMP while on the water.

Volunteers will also be checking boats for invasive mussels. Boats coming from high-risk locations may be quarantined or decontaminated, and failure to clean mussels off boats or equipment could result in a fine of up to $100,000.
