A Vernon student has won a top award at a provincial French public speaking competition.
Annika Torrie, a Grade 9 French immersion student at W. L. Seaton Secondary, won third place for her speech on the effect of music on the brain.
Seven other Vernon students were finalists in the competition, which was held on May 7 at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby.
More than 10,000 students from across B.C. participated in the competition.
“In addition to the cultural and language benefits, concours d’art oratoire (the public speaking contest) helps students develop their creative and public speaking abilities, as well as self-confidence,” said Patti Holm, president of Canadian Parents for French B.C. and Yukon.
