Dear Editor:

Re: “The dangers of cliff diving,” (Courier editorial, Aug. 8).

One thing that may help deter people from jumping is to post a sign stating the number of deaths and injuries that have occurred from jumping from the cliff.

I have jumped from a cliff or two in my youth, but I think I may have given it more thought if I came across a sign that read “two people have died, and seven were seriously injured as a result of jumping from this spot.” Cross out the numbers and update as needed.

You can’t stop people from doing what they want to do (and realistically you can’t totally prevent people from harming themselves. We all have to be responsible for our own safety and choices in life.)

That said, enabling an educated choice versus impulsive decision may lead to less casualties.
