A combined 11 Saskatchewan Huskies and Alberta Golden Bears were honoured Wednesday by Canada West, as the conference’s men’s hockey all-stars and all-rookies were unveiled.

Former Rockets defenceman and assistant captain Gordie Ballhorn was named to the All-Rookie Team.

Ballhorn played three seasons with the Rockets between 2015 and 2018.

The Wetaskiwin, Alta., product suited up in 175 WHL regular-season games, all for the Rockets, recording 11 goals and 49 assists for 60 points with 181 penalty minutes and a career plus-71 rating. Ballhorn also added four assists in 39 playoff games.

He was an assistant captain for Kelowna during the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 seasons.

After graduating from the WHL last spring, Ballhorn signed a professional contract with the Allen Americans, the ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s San Jose Sharks. He played in three regular-season and seven post-season games for Allen, registering one assist.

This season, Ballhorn played 28 games with the Huskies, producing 12 points (1G, 11A) and 53 penalty minutes.

Joining Ballhorn on the All-Rookie Team were Mount Royal goaltender Riley Morris, fellow defenceman James Shearer from the U of Calgary, and forwards Colton Kroeker (Mount Royal), Grayson Pawlenchuk (Alberta) and Bradley Schoonbaert (Calgary).

Ballhorn and the Huskies open the Canada West playoffs this weekend after a first-round bye. They will host the Mount Royal Cougars in the second round.

The conference’s major awards will be announced on Wednesday, Feb. 27 in advance of the CW Final, which starts on Friday, March 1.
