Zane Avery had three assists and the Kelowna Chiefs opened the KIJHL preseason with a win and tie over the Summerland Steam on the weekend.
After the teams skated to a 3-3 tie Friday at the Rutland Arena, the Chiefs doubled the Steam 4-2 on Saturday in Summerland.
Josh Bourchier and Jordon Woytas scored and Cody Swan assisted on both for the Steam in the home-ice defeat to the defending regular season-champion Chiefs.
Avery racked up three assists to lead the Chiefs.
Chiefs 3, Steam 3
Kelowna started the scoring early Friday with a quick goal scored by Spencer Horning and assisted by Logan Keating. Keating would not stop there, however, and he scored the second Kelowna goal to put the Chiefs ahead 2-1.
Leo Harju made it 3-1 and seemingly put the game out of reach for the 341 fans.
Summerland, though, had different plans and stormed back with two goals of its own.
Both teams exchanged grade A chances in the final minute, but the door was shut by the opposing goalies. In exhibition play, there is no overtime.
The Steam finish up their pre-season slate with a home-and-home against the Osoyoos Coyotes this Friday (in Summerland) and Saturday (in Osoyoos).
Osoyoos held its training camp on the weekend and hosted the Princeton Posse in their exhibition opener Monday night.
Osoyoos also hosts Princeton this Sunday at 6 p.m. to close it out.
Kelowna is back at home Friday and Saturday.
Regular season starts
The KIJHL regular season starts Sept. 13-14 with Osoyoos on the road to play Columbia Valley and Kimberley, while the Steam are at home to play Kelowna and North Okanagan.
