Homeless people in Kelowna will have another warm and safe place to sleep this winter, beginning tonight.

The Inn from the Cold program has started up again, about two weeks earlier than usual. Organizers also hope to continue the service until the end of March, about two weeks later than in past years.

However, directors say the cost of making modifications to their shelter to comply with fire safety regulations has “seriously depleted” the group‘s financial reserves, and they‘re appealing for public donations.

Sponsorships can be made directly through the charitable organization‘s website, www.innfromthecoldkelowna.org.

“This is a unique opportunity for the shelter to partner with community-minded groups and socially conscious businesses who really want to make a difference,” said spokesperson Tara Tschritter.

In recognition of the spread of the H1N1 flu virus, hand-sanitizing stations have been installed at the 35-bed shelter, and the group has adopted protocols suggested by Interior Health.

Last year, there were more than 1,700 overnight stays at the Inn from the Cold co-ed shelter, which operated for 83 nights. The group has more than 100 volunteers, most from local churches.

It‘s considered a low-barrier form of shelter in that it‘s open to people who may have used drugs or alcohol. Its basic rule is that guests must treat others with respect and not abuse the facilities.
