Editor’s note: This is the first of 40 profiles for the Kelowna Top Forty Under 40 program presented by BDO Accountants and Consultants, the Junior Chamber of Commerce International, Okanagan branch, Kelowna Chamber of Commerce and The Daily Courier. Every week in this space we’ll feature someone under the age of 40 who is making an impact through business, community involvement and innovation. Dustin Serviss, 32, a senior associate with Peacock Sheridan Group, a wealth accumulation and insurance innovation firm, is a great guy to kick the program off.
A total of eight nominations poured in for Dustin Serviss for the Kelowna Top Forty Under 40.
“And they all came from actual clients,” said Serviss, 32, with a laugh.
“It wasn’t me nominating myself or someone at my workplace nominating me.”
Serviss is a senior associate at Peacock Sheridan Group, a firm the does financial planning, investments, insurance and benefits for high-net worth clients and businesses.
Eight nominations is quite a testament that Serviss has made an impact with his clients, one of the criteria for Top Forty Under 40 recognition.
The others are community involvment and innovation.
“Dustin is just such a stand-up guy,” said Craig Simla, one of Serviss’s nominators and co-owner of Mearls Machine Shop.
“Dustin is handling all our personal and business financial planning and investments and he’s such a refreshing person to deal with. He’s straightforward and honest and we’ve also become good friends.”
The accolades don’t stop there.
“When you have someone do all your personal and business financial planning you have to reveal a lot,” said client Brad Macaulay, the owner of Versatile Fabrication & Machine.
“We felt comfortable putting everything before Dustin because he’s so knowledgeable and resourceful and gave confidence to me and my family.”
As a senior associate, Serviss helps clients with all their individual and business financial planning and investments.
He also helps assemble the team of lawyers and accountants the client may need.
“I’m like the quarterback,” said Serviss.
“I help the client get financially organized. That means planning, investments, insurance, estate and succession planning and employee benefits. But when it comes to the full package of including legal and accounting services I can also bring in specialists.”
While Serviss is certainly detail-oriented, he tries to keep the process as simple and straight- forward as possible for clients.
“I’ve created a financial dashboard, a one-page visual, that has everything on it for my clients to see where they are at. These are busy entrepreneurs who want a clear and simple message.”
Reaching this point in his career at age 32 is quite amazing.
And even more amazing because Serviss went to school to become a civil engineer.
But upon graduating he gravitated to the financial services industry and Peacock Sheridan.
Along the way he’s earned his certified financial planner, chartered life underwriter and certified health specialist designations.
While young, Serviss prefers to business the old-fashioned way.
“I use my social ability to bring people together, have fun and network,” he said.
“I meet people and if we click and they’d like to work with me, great.”
Referrals and appreciation are also a big part of Serviss’ business.
“I put on events for my clients to show my appreciation,” he said.
He organized a car show for clients featuring new high-end cars, hotrods, boats and motorcycles.
And the Wealthy Wine event for woman only combined wine with strategies for getting and staying rich.
Clients were invited to bring friends along to the events who might also want to work with Serviss.
