Former American League pitcher Jim Parque will be participating in a baseball fundraising event in Penticton this coming Saturday.
The Best Damn Sports Bar on Martin Street will host a day-long event from noon until 9 p.m. to help raise money for LABC Team Canada, an all-star program which will send four teams (under-18, U-16, U-14 and U-12) to the 32nd annual Latin American Baseball Classic in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, from Aug. 6-12. The teams feature players from across B.C., but mostly from Kelowna, Penticton and Summerland.
Tickets for the fundraiser are $20 which includes live music by The Shake (Brad Gibson, Sheldon Scott, Mike Barron, Glen Gibson), a hamburger platter, one beverage, games, draws, silent auction (featuring authenticated sports merchandise) and an appearance by Parque.
Parque, a former first-round draft pick, played seven seasons in the majors with the Chicago White Sox and Tampa Bay Devil Rays, amassing a career record of 31-34. He was a bronze medalist with Team USA in the 1996 Olympics.
Tickets may be purchased in advance at the bar or from Tiger Alley at 326 Main Street. Shuttle service for $5 is available within Penticton by calling 250-462-9396.
The teams are also collecting gently-used equipment which will be donated to the Beyond the Beach Children’s Foundation which benefits underprivileged children in the Dominican. Any equipment may be dropped off at the bar between noon and 4 p.m.
